Baseball

On Monday 18th April, Beavers and Cubs had a change of venue for their weekly meeting. They exchanged the normal view of the hall for the wide open space of Forest Glade FC's ground at Barleylands. They had been invited along by Redbacks Baseball, www.essexredbacks.com to try their hand at baseball.

The Head Youth Coach, Steve Briscomb, and his team welcomed everyone to the ground and showed the Beavers and Cubs what baseball is all about. Each child learnt how to throw, catch and to hit the ball, although some where more successful than others. After learning the basics each section had a quick game to put what they had learnt into practice.

As the constant breeze turned to a chilly wind, Tigger retired to her car to watch the games in the warm. By the time the Cubs were finishing their session the sun was starting to set.
A Great time was had by all.

Quiz Night

Over £250 was raised at Saturday evenings Family Quiz night.
Tigger Tigers scrapped into first place by just 2 points.
A fun evening was had by all.

The Quays

Beavers, Cubs and Scouts were invited to The Quays to promote their new Square Burger.
There was a magician making balloon animals and a lady painting faces, but unfortunately the promised bouncy castle never appeared.

Lunch was provided for the children, only Declan got his hands on a square burger and then it was only for promotional purposes.

Red Nose Day Pyjama Party and Cake Sale

Beavers had a pyjama party for Red Nose Day and raised £137.42!
Everyone paid a pound for the privilege of coming along in their PJ's. There was a disco and party food as well as a cake sale. So much cake was donated to the sale that some of the leaders took leftover cakes to sell at work.
Thank you to everyone for their generosity.

Belchamps Beavers Sleepover 2011

Beaver Scouts from all over Essex had a fantastic time at Belchamps Activity Centre when they joined in with one of the Centre’s  Beaver Spring Sleepovers.

Everyone eagerly arrived in the evening; groups from all over Essex and some further away. After finding their bunks and settling in, the Beavers went off for activities on the main field. Thoroughly warmed up and raring to go, the crew led a ramble through the woods onsite, seeing the way by torchlight.

The walk ended with a roaring camp fire. Lots of action songs, and enthusiastically loud singing were the order of the evening. Even some of the leaders learnt some new ones!

The evening was rounded off back at the dining area where supper of hotdogs and hot-chocolate were waiting. Well-fed and entertained, the Beavers got to bed. And they went to sleep straight away. Honest.

Next morning we all enjoyed a hearty breakfast and went off in groups to start our activities. With a wide selection; from archery to caving, cooking to fencing, there was something for everyone and the Beavers all got stuck in. The only break from the fun and excitement was for lunch, but it was soon back to the adventure.

The sleepover finished at 3.30pm with a small closing ceremony. A huge thank you to Belchamps Scout Activity Centre, the Crew, staff and cooking team, your enthusiasm and helpfulness made the event a great success.

Twice a year, Belchamps run two Beaver sleepovers over one weekend; one in March and one in December.

3rd - 4th December 2010 - Just how much fun can be had in 21 hours?

60 Beavers from Basildon District had their first ever combined Christmas Sleepover.Beavers from 1st Pitsea & Vange's Hundred Aker Wood colony; Pitsea St. Micheal: 9th Basildon and 1st Laindon beaver colonies had a fantastic time at the home of Ist Pitsea & Vange, Riverton Hall.

The event started with all the eager Beavers arriving at the hall at 6.30pm complete with enough luggage to last a week! Friday night is always a good time for a party and plenty of fun was had by all. The evening was rounded off at 10pm with a good movie and then off to bed, camping out on roll mats in the upstairs hall.

When the catering team arrived at 7am on a frosty Saturday morning everyone in the hall was still asleep. Bleary eyed leaders and beavers started to emerge as the sounds of breakfast preparation began to emanate from the kitchen. After a hearty continental breakfast it was time for a couple of games in the still frosty garden whilst the 'breakfast room' was transformed into an 'arts & crafts centre'. Teams of 6 beavers worked their way around 10 bases, from producing gifts for Mum and Dad, Christmas cards and calendars, to decorated biscuits and funky foam Christmas trees. After a quick run around the garden to burn of all the energy that had been pent-up during the craft activities, a wonderful Christmas lunch was served up by the catering team who had not been allowed out of the kitchen since their arrival!

After lunch the beavers were surprised by a visit from Father Christmas who said he had got up especially early from his yearly sleep to pop in with presents for all the Beavers. Tigger, Ist Pitsea & Vange's GSL also received a present from Santa. He knew Tigger had broken her hot water bottle at Cub Camp in the summer (Tiggers suffer very badly from the cold, needing thick duvets and hot water bottles even at the height of summer) so he presented her with a new one which had a very soft cuddly cover and so looked like a toy dog. And as everyone in scouting knows, if you're going to camp you MUST take a cuddly toy with you so now Tigger only has to take her hot water bottle.

Once the parents arrived there was a flurry of activity as everyone collected bags and crafts and set off on their way home, leaving behind several piece of lost property and lots of glitter.Thank you to Tigger and everyone else involved who made the event such a success. Here's to next year!

14th November 2010 - Remembrance Day Parade

Today 1st Pitsea & Vange Scout Group were privileged to take part in the Basildon Royal British Legion's annual parade and church service for Remembrance Day.

Even though it was an overcase and chilly day, all the members of the group left their coats behind to parade in full uniform as a mark of respect to those who have lost their lives in wars and conflicts over the last 90years.

Chloe had the honour of carrying the District Beaver flag and Connor the District Cub flag. In all 4 Beavers, 7 Cubs and 10 Scouts braved the weather to join in the ceremony, along with a large contingent from Genesis Basildon Explorers.

28 Apr 2010 - Ford Dunton - Engineers get splattered

Whilst all the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts were enjoying a normal day at school over 25 engineers from Fords at Dunton descended on the hall for a fun day of clearing junk, decorating and gardening.

The day started in a very civilised manor with tea, coffee and bacon rolls. Once fuelled for the day everyone got to work.

Engineers and family volunteers got splattered with paint even though they dressed up like aliens.

Getting out of the office meant getting out into the garden for some grown-ups, having an adventure in the grounds, playing with dirt, weeds and cut grass, one even found a slow worm :-)

Tigger said "Where is all this stuff going to go?"

Come in and visit to see for yourself what an amazing transformation is taking place. We are getting there but still have a way to go.

Thank you Fords for letting your people out on a community day to help us out :-)
